What are the leading causes of high cholesterol?

As per a recent research, High cholesterol is impacting the lives of 30 percent individuals residing in the urban areas and 25 percent in the rural areas. The leading causes associated with high cholesterol are:

  1. Inactive lifestyle – lack of exercise

  2. Obesity

  3. Unhealthy diet

  4. Smoking
  5. Drinking Alcohol

How can high cholesterol impact your eyes?

High cholesterol can impact your eyes primarily in two ways i.e., accumulation of deposits near the eye lids and in the blood vessels connecting the eyes to the brain. While accumulation of deposits may not affect your vision, it can lead to high discomfort and impact the cosmetic look of your eyes. Deposits near the eyelids is a clear indicator of high cholesterol and these deposits must be cleaned regularly to avoid issues.

The impact of high cholesterol can be more severe as it can lead to blockage in the blood vessels connecting the eyes to the brain. Such blockages can cause loss of vision and if untreated can also lead to complete loss of vision. The most common diseases caused due to high cholesterol are:

  1. Xanthelasma – Deposits near the eyelids

  2. Arcus Senilis – Development of deposits in the cornea

  3. Retinal Vein Occlusion – Blockage of blood vessels connecting the retina to the brain.

  4. Hollenhorst plaque – Building up of plaque in blood vessels.
